Making Human Microbiology Computable

Human microbiology examines how microbial communities living in and on the body metabolize drugs, process nutrients, and influence health outcomes. Despite being one of the most complex and data-rich areas in biology, it remains difficult for R&D teams to translate this complexity into actionable insights. While many biological frontier models focus primarily on components encoded in human DNA, our health is influenced by interactions between human and microbial biology.

Outpost Bio aims to address this gap by developing frontier AI models at this interaction layer, focusing on human microbiology. Our Lab-in-the-Loop platform combines high-throughput wet-lab assays with machine learning to develop a closed feedback loop in which models learn from experimental results and guide subsequent testing.

Improving our understanding of human microbiology will unlock new drug targets, safer and more effective medicines, and the ability to design interventions at the intersection of precision medicine and microbial engineering. We're at the moment when this becomes possible.

Our Values

Evidence over Eminence

We encourage open debate grounded in truth-

seeking and practical effectiveness. We actively seek diverse perspectives and are humble enough to admit we're wrong.

How this shows up

Respectfully challenging each other's ideas without making it personal.

Backing up decisions with examples/data or clear logic.

Celebrating strong arguments from any level or role.

Owning up to mistakes and pivoting quickly once the evidence points elsewhere.

Choosing solutions that work over solutions that sound impressive or are trendy.

You Got This

We trust each other and encourage fearless pursuits of crazy big ideas. You got you before you got this - self-care fuels innovation. Scared you're thinking too big? You Got This.

How this shows up

Trusting your gut and taking initiative without asking for approval.

Embracing setbacks as growth opportunities rather than failures.

Leading with empathy, supporting and encouraging each other.

Taking care of ourselves: sleep, relationships, health.

We bring our best selves to work.

Insist on Higher Standards

We have relentlessly high standards for our work and its impact on society. Failures provide an opportunity to elevate our execution and impact.

How this shows up

We enjoy producing great work, we take pride in our craft.

Feeling secure and safe at work, so we can be vocally self-critical.

Feedback is a gift; we offer it so we can all improve and grow.

We move fast but take care to do no harm; we are a force for good.

Evidence over Eminence

We accomplish more with less through clear

communication and planning. But we are unafraid to tear up our plans and pivot. Time is precious, we decide quickly.

How this shows up

Cancelling a meeting when prep work was required, but we didn't get it done.

Questioning whether a purchase, task, or new project truly adds value.

Acting like owners, not renters, in every decision we make.

By communicating in an open, direct, and kind way with each other.

By putting in more time up front to develop a plan that saves us effort later.

Life at Outpost

We're a small team, split between Boston and London. Small enough that you know everyone's working style and can ask for help directly. Large enough that when you need help with something a subject matter expert is available to pitch in.

Our day to day is a mix of focused work (coding, writing, thinking, experimental design), lab time, and meetings (we try to keep these to a minimum). We are big believers in async-first communication, and we like planning ahead to save time later. We are open and trusting with each other, prioritizing team building and learning about how each of us shows up at work.

We are big believers in lab-in-the-loop. To us, this means both wet lab and computational teams need each other to be successful. We enable and educate each other on our respective areas of expertise and experience so we can do the best work of our careers together.

We have lives outside of work. We believe that our best work comes when we are rested and balanced, that the goal is high performance over the long-run, not burning out. With that said, we care deeply about our mission, and can't wait to get to work each day, to chip away and get closer to our goal.

Open Roles

Computational Biologist (Boston)

Bridge biology and computation to help build the AI intelligence layer for human microbiology.

Location:
Boston
Boston

Microbiome research today lives in two worlds. Assay-heavy labs build truth datasets but lack AI to model the complexity. AI teams build promising models on existing data, but can't understand causal mechanisms. We're working to narrow this gap. We're hiring a Computational Biologist to sit at the intersection of the wet lab and computational teams. You'll analyse proprietary multi-omic datasets generated in-house, run your own computational studies, and build the analytical foundations that feed directly into our AI platform. We're scaling our Boston screening platform and releasing a public foundation model this year. You're the person who makes our experimental output computationally actionable.

We are hiring a scientist to drive the wet-lab workstreams that generate the proprietary datasets behind our platform. You will execute stool-derived community culturing and anaerobic screening workflows that provide high-quality data to our models in the near term and chart new experiments beyond.

Work on a problem that matters.

Our mission is ambitious, and our standards are high. Our culture is built on intellectual honesty, deep ownership, reliably doing what we say we will do. If you are a builder who thrives on candid feedback and are ready to do the best work of your career, we would love to meet you.

An open invitation to researchers.

We’re building AI to predict how interventions impact the human microbiome and will be contributing foundational datasets and models back to the scientific community. We’re seeking collaborators with rich pre/post-intervention datasets of the microbiome. We'll offer partners rich insights to existing datasets.
